First of all, I just got back from TFCon, and it was fun. I'll post pictures of it soon.
Okay, I just finished the entire series of a show called Ruby Gloom, and honestly.... I love it. The show is a slice of life story of some monster kids living in a mansion. The characters include the main character Ruby, a human girl that looks like a rag doll that is optimistic and friendly. Skull Boy, Ruby's love interest who looks for a purpose in life, and wants to know more about his unknown family. Iris a cyclops who loves to have fun and excitement even if it kills her. Misery (Everyones favorite character, including me), a banshie who despite being sad can be really funny at times. She has the cutest giggles. Frank and Len, a 2 headed monster kid(s) who love to play metal music in their band called R.I.P. Frank is the head on the right and Len is the head on the left. They're both stupid, but Len is the most stupid in my opinion. Poe is a crow, who thinks he's intelligent but not that much. Scaredy is a bat who's afraid of everything, and the character that made indian accents cute before Sunil. Doom Kitty is Ruby's pet, while she doesn't speak, she communicates through emotion, body movement, and a violin playing. Mr. Buns is a sock rabbit doll that may or may not be alive. And there's Boo Boo, a kid ghost that loves to prank everyone (mostly his best friend Scaredy), yet for some reason didn't appear that much in the later episodes. The characters are funny, likable, and charming.
The animation is flash animation, and it looks amazing. It looks fluid in motion, and the shading and lighting effects look lovely, seeing as it's soft shading and not hard shading. I love how the designs feel consistent, and I love the gothic nature to the environment. I also enjoy the music which sounds like a victorian era goth style. I can't describe music very well.
The thing I like about this series is that being a slice of life show, there is no main villain to cause conflict for our characters. Okay there were some characters that gave them trouble, but they were one off characters. Speaking of, the show does include minor characters like Skele T and his Skele-Tune band. Poe's brothers Edgar and Allan who never say a word. Misery's relatives who are miserable like her (well not all of them). Mr. Mummbles, an old man that has an amusement park in his glass house. Venus, a french speaking flytrap. Squig, Iris's pet flying worm. And my favorite(s) Mr. White and Mr. White, who are part of the ghost mafia, and are Boo Boo's mentors.
As much as I love the characters, there is one question I have to ask. Where are their parents? I know that Misery has relatives and Skull Boy might be an orphan, but what about the rest of the characters? Are they all orphans? Are they at a private school? Is the mansion their club house? Is Poe their garden or something since he's the oldest? Are they dead and this house is basically their Purgatory? I have no idea.
All in all, I love this series. In fact, this has to be one of the best gothic cartoon shows right next to Beetlejuice. It's a shame that this didn't air in the US (The show was shown in Canada BTW). I'd rather watch Ruby Gloom, than the Retarded Adventures of Billy and Mandy (Yes I hate that show). But I think it's a bigger shame that this series didn't last that long. Only 40 episodes. I wish it was longer than that. Why not 80 or 100 episodes? Why must the good shows die, when the bad shows live? But still, this is a great show. It's funny, heart warming, hardly anything mean spirited, and it shows a positive image to the goth culture. The show truly does show the bright side of the dark side.
